In addition to enabling the collection of more photons before saturating, scanning an external point source perpindicular to the dispersion direction produces an illumination pattern similar to that produced by an internal lamp illuminating a long, narrower slit. This may make corrections for IR-fringing and pixel-to-pixel variations more accurate. This proposal will test the repeatability of fluxes determined from STIS spatial scans by taking a series of spectroscopic exposures with the STIS G750L grating of the known exoplanet host 55 Cnc, trailed in the large 52X2 aperture. Deep contemporaneous lamp flats, taken through the narrower 52X0.1 aperture, will be used to remove the fringing at wavelengths beyond about 7000 A. Similar (but more limited) observations obtained in program 15383 yielded rms scatter of order 30 ppm in the total "white light" fluxes when "de-trended" to remove systematic instrumental effects. This longer program will include a transit of 55 Cnc e, in order to gauge how well the transit can be characterized in this observing mode. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The scan geometry was checked in program 15383 by alternating imaging mode (MIRVIS) scans of a point source up the 52X2 aperture with lamp images of the 52X0.1 aperture. For fringing correction, it is important that the alignment between the point source and the fringe flat aperture be as precise as possible. In SIAF file, the X pixel positions for 52X2 and 52X0.1 are 538.26 and 537.29 respectively, while the assumed scale is 0.050763"/pixel in X, so need to move target in 52X2 by -0.04924" to align with 52X0.1. Analysis of those scan data suggested that the scan angle needs to be increased by +0.065 degrees to optimize the alignment between the scan and the 52X0.1. Getting the starting position right also requires adjusting the X POS TARG by -0.065/180*pi*(Y POS TARG) to ensure that the scan starts in the correct location. For scans along the 52X2 this needs to be added to the aperture offset of -0.04924" in the x direction between the 52X2 and the 52X0.1. We chose 55 Cnc as our target (for this program and 15383), since it is both bright and has several deep G750L sequences taken with saturated images to study the planetary transit. These will provide useful comparsion data to 16442( 8) - 09-Apr-2021 13:49:00 - [ 2] evaluate the utility of trailed exposures to do similar science. Since we wish to compare the flux repeatabilty from orbit-to-orbit and to see how well a transit can be characterized in this observing mode, we will place the middle of the transit in the occultation between orbits 3 and 4 (see Table 3 of Sulis et al. 2019, A&A, 631, A129). Note that the variations seen during opposition and outside transit are likely due to the planet's thermal emission and won't be visible at our wavelengths. The transit dip ends at about phase 0.045 and starts at 0.955. The time between start of ACQ and the middle of the occultation between orbits 3 and 4 is about 258 min or 0.243 times the planet's orbital period. The new requirement for 6 min of scan-free time at the end of each visibility period shifts the effective center of non-visibility time by 3 min -- so 255 min and 0.240 times the period. (So we will confine the phase for the timing of the initial ACQ to be between 0.755 and 0.765. This gives windows for the start time about 10 min long -- so that we can cover both ingress and egress of the transit, as well as the edges of the transit minimum. Numerous possible windows are nominally available (but fewer, once the tight phase constraints are applied). The five orbits in this program will be used to verify the flux stability and repeatability for trails in a wide aperture. Each of these orbits will consist of 6-9 forward scans along the 52X2 of 192 s duration each and 12" in length (0.0625"/s scanning rate) and will include the POS TARGs needed to align the scans with the 52X0.1 and center the scan in the Y direction on the detector. A wavecal exposure will be taken before and after each series of scans, as well as a number of fringe flat tungsten exposures with the 52X0.1. Scanned spectra in program 15383, which used a slightly slower scan rate and slightly longer exposure times (but the same scan length), achieved typical count rates of 1-2e4 per pixel in the well exposed region below about 7500 A. In addition do the default 2x50s fringe flats, which show a flux level ranging from about 1600 - 2900 DN/pixel (6, 500 - 12, 000 e-/pixel), we have also included a number of 210 s tungsten lamp images with target=NONE, which should give levels between about 54, 000 and 100, 000 e-/pixel.
